In the Hemingway Story, He evokes basically loneliness almost entirely with dialogue. Hemingway writes about interactions between the Young Waiter, Old Waiter, and of course the Old Man. Writing about happiness and death. No one wants to come across death. But everyone wants to come across happiness.
The Young Waiter and Old Man are very different. The Old Man is a depressed drunk who just wants to end his life. The Young Waiters got the job, home, and wife. All the Old Mans got is a glass of brandy, and who knows how long he’s been sitting there. The story is just about just an Old Man sitting at a bar just drinking alone. The first sign of being a alcoholic is drinking alone. By the Young Waiter saying “You should have killed yourself last week. That shows a weakness towards the Old Man. As the story goes on the Young Waiter, tired and stressed, just wants to go home to bed. While the Old Man Is sitting at the bar with a glass of brandy, asks him for another. Young Waiter says no and tells him to go home, and he does.
No one wants death, but it’s a normal thing In life. Everyone wants to enjoy happiness though. Happiness is just a state of mind or feeling by love, satisfaction, and pleasure. My last thought on this story is the Young Waiter needs a smack across the face because of the way he disrespected the Old Man. Nobody should disrespect anyone, especially a old man.
